Transmission 125: Pigeons
My first day on Earth.

- - - - - GREETINGS, EARTHLING - - - - -
This week I am sharing something special.
A five-part story about my first week on Earth.
The mistakes, misunderstandings,
and small miracles that taught me what it means to be human.

- - - - - PART 1/5 - - - - -
My arrival on Earth was… unconventional.
The manual I was given said,
“Assume the dominant local form and integrate seamlessly.”
Easy enough.
Except no one told me which form that was.
I emerged in the middle of a park,
surrounded by creatures cooing, bobbing, and pecking at bread crumbs.
They outnumbered everything else by the thousands.
They strutted with confidence.
They fought over crumbs with conviction.
I was certain I had found the leaders of the planet.
So, naturally, I became one.
My first attempt at integration went quite well.
I learned to coo, to flap, to tilt my head meaningfully.
I even built rapport with a particularly respected elder
who controlled a prime bench near the fountain.
I slept in trees.
I bathed in puddles.
I stole fries.
I was, by all accounts, thriving.
Then came the incident at the inn.
According to my Integration Objectives List,
I was required to “secure local lodging and demonstrate use of human currency.”
I approached the counter,
puffed my feathers with confidence,
and said very clearly,
“Greetings, Earthling. Lodgings please.”
The innkeeper screamed and ran away.
That’s when I realized perhaps pigeons,
while numerous, were not in charge after all.
“Human currency.” I guess I missed an obvious clue…
So, on the third sunrise of my mission,
I shed my feathers, stretched into a new shape,
and smiled at my reflection in a rain puddle.
For a moment, I thought I had it right.
Then a human screamed again.

Today, resist the urge to blend in right away.
Take your time.
Look around first.
Read the manual.
Confirm you are not accidentally joining a flock of pigeons.

Snow.
Beautiful, like stars falling from the sky when the light hits just right.
It makes everything quieter.
A walk on a snow-covered evening feels almost enchanted.
Snow makes the world look clean again,
hiding all the dirt and cracks in the sidewalks.
It turns everything new.
It also creates a whole new layer of fun.
Snowshoeing, skiing, snowmen, and snowball fights.
A Winter Wonderland.
Until it isn’t.
The shovelling.
The frostbitten hands even under gloves,
the scraping of windshields,
the frozen door handles,
the ice-block cars,
the wet socks.
Snow, it seems, is a treasure best enjoyed in small doses.
